1. Near, Far, Wherever You Are - Leverage Community Career Support/Networking Groups Anywhere + Everywhere
There are so many local and virtual career networking groups across the United States. Being Dallas-based, I discovered a treasure trove of these groups—shoutout to CareerDFW.org and South Lake Focus Group. A network contact recommended going to a session from 8 a.m. to noon the next day. Leaning into it (because nothing else was moving the needle and I had nothing to lose), I woke up at the crack of dawn, braved DFW traffic, and drove 45 minutes to South Lake Focus Group—and I’m glad I did.
They focused on résumé building, networking, and career/skill development, plus they’re on the cutting edge of what’s trending in the hiring market. What I also learned is that these groups are all over the country, and people from other states were coming to SFG meetings, too. (Thank you, post-COVID digital Zoom world.) Even better, I found a conglomerate of these groups through CareerDFW.org.
Why is this such a killer resource? It helped me find inspiration, it helped me find structure, and it re-energized my stone-cold motivation and job search when I was out of jet-pack fuel on my get-hired journey.
2. You CAN Swipe With Us - Leverage Your Library Card For More Than Books
Through said networking group above, I also found an incredible free resource that’s been under my nose all along. Spoiler: it’s the public library! Your library has access to databases, training resources, and more—and can be accessed from home, like TODAY, JUNIOR. For those of you who don’t have a library card (like me, initially), you can often get one pretty quickly by searching for a library in your state willing to give you one. I used Houston’s, even though I’m based in Dallas.
One of my favorite resources I discovered through the library is Udemy via Gale Learning. Previously, I had to pay for Udemy courses—and while I gladly did, finances are tight now, and that limits spending on future learning/career development. Thanks to my library card, I can now access incredible training resources for free, taught by experts who have seen it all (huge plus!).
Pro Tip: Interested in this Udemy Hack? Here’s how to get started:
Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Access through your library
Search and select your library
Enter your library credentials
You should land on https://link.gale.com/apps/udemy/auth
Sign in or create your Udemy account (you can tie it to your Gmail)
Nerd Out! 🤓
For future logins, use the Gale Udemy link above (sadly, you can’t go directly to Udemy).
3. Because Talk Ain’t Cheap But Your Wallet Is - Low-Cost Therapy + Advice for the Low-Confident Mindset
Therapy doesn’t have to be a dirty word. You are not broken because you seek therapy—far from it. Just like some successful dead guy (whose name is up for debate) said, “Surround yourself with people smarter than you,” therapy is exactly that.
Sometimes it’s hard to have perspective when you’re stuck in the mud, living in your own weedy, seedy, 💩 garden. If you’re burnt out and stuck, you may just need an extra hand (or three) to get out of your head. Another great resource a friend told me about is BetterHelp.com, which offers therapy at a discounted rate—$65–100/week with a therapist and other great resources. I was able to get the first two weeks free. This same friend also gave me the perspective that it’s okay—even helpful—to have multiple therapists for multiple reasons. AND BOY DID THAT BLOW MY MIND! 🤯
Pro Tip: Multiple therapists aren’t for the purpose of justifying your behaviors or proving one therapist is “right.” It’s about supporting your brain and getting different perspectives to battle the mindset roadblocks you face. Since it can take roughly 2–7 times to hear a message before taking action, you might need 2–7 different people sharing the same message in various ways before it finally clicks.
4. Take It Easy - Leverage Templates, Content, + Worksheets 2 Make Things Easy
Are you a-runnin’ down the road, tryin’ to loosen your load with a world of trouble on your mind when it comes to documenting or sharing information? (#SorryNotSorry for the Eagles pun.) A blank canvas can be daunting and mentally overwhelming. Save time (and your peace of mind) with cheap or free resources to refine, not define.
I didn’t become a presentation queen overnight. I found a tool called Envato Elements, where I pay less than $20/month to access really cool templates, schematics, and creative assets that I can tweak and make my own. This is great because, between ChatGPT, Canva, Lucidchart, and Envato Elements, I have a way to visually and succinctly present what I want to say without frying my brain. Not only do I drive the crowds wild, but doing it this way also gets me…inspired. Trying to recreate the wheel can be exhausting, especially with unemployment burnout. What’s exciting and motivating? Finding cool templates that fit your needs and then “jeuje”-ing them up to make them your own.
Pro Tip: Smartsheets also provides a gazillion of free templates for you spreadsheet freaks to tweak. 🧮
5. [Net]work Smarter Not Harder - Networking that has you Net-kinda-working Via Forum/Chat Communities
Instead of being a Keyboard Karen, be a keyboard champion who has the confidence to reach out to people without the awkward pressure of “talking to strangers.” Google or ask friends/trusted colleagues what online communities are hopping. Is it Slack? Reddit threads? Heck, Amazon reviews for real-talk testimonials? Let’s be honest: with all the ghost jobs and spammy content out there, if you’re an introvert or ambivert, it’s really hard to network in a way that doesn’t add to the anxiety of being unemployed. Find your people in a genuine fashion, and build your brand in a way that works for you. I sense a follow-up blog on my favorite resources in the near future, but sigh, not today, Satan. Here’s a Marketing Slack Community list to get you going—some I haven’t even checked out yet!
Pro Tip: LinkedIn jobs are dead. What’s not? Jobs posted in Slack channels. But act on them QUICK.
6. Positivity + Self Love But Not the Kumbaya, Crunchy Granola Kind - Build Confidence In A Way That Turns You Into A Believer
Raise your hand if your confidence has taken a hit. 🙋♀️ Raise your hand again if you feel your lack of confidence is making it hard to nail interviews. 🙋♀️🙋♀️ I found a stat indicating that 40% of interviewers/recruiters say a candidate’s overall confidence affects their hiring decisions. So if almost half the people interviewing you want confidence and you don’t have it, how likely are you to nail a job—especially after multiple rounds of interviews?
Find a way to be positive and give yourself self-love in a way where you can sip your own Kool-Aid. For example, the concept of “giving gratitude” for positivity eludes me. It’s too fluffy, making me feel like I’m Wednesday Addams at Camp Chippewa’s Thanksgiving play. What does work for me, though, is writing down three wins weekly, then looking back on them at the end of the month. Why? Because I’m a gold-star, competitive-trophy millennial who loves pressure-washing videos—aka, I like seeing instant positive results and feel like a failure when I don’t.
My version of self-love? Giving myself a hug just gives me straitjacket vibes. Instead, I write down things that bring me joy so I can pick from them in times of struggle, and I leave Post-it love notes throughout my house. That’s what helps me. Find your positivity activity. If you don’t have one in mind, guess what? Google and ChatGPT can tell you. (Or, if you feel lazy, here’s a list I found via Google that gave me 33 options to consider.)
7. IF All Else Fails, Play[List] It Out - Leverage Music To Hyperfocus
Music can be a secret weapon when you’re stuck in a funk. Certain songs or playlists can boost dopamine levels, reduce stress, and help you regain focus—perfect for pushing past that wall of unemployment burnout. Whether you prefer lo-fi beats for deep work or an 80s power-ballad playlist for a quick jolt of motivation, the key is finding tunes that resonate with your mood and goal. Crank it up, zone in on your tasks, and let the rhythm nudge you out of your rut and into a more productive groove. My gift to you, is my Overcoming Burnout Playlist🔥 below.👇
